CMC's solutions spoil quickly and must be reconstituted every time just before use.
The adhesive strength of CMC is much less than that of starch.
CMC is mainly used to reinforce weak paper, as it is able to penetrate deeply between the fibers,
resulting in a good impregnation.
After the glue has dried, it still remains flexible, so that the paper does not stiffen.
CMC is used as a water-retaining gel in some topical procedures, such as removing stains,
further as a fixative for pigments such as in chalk and charcoal drawings.
