5-day masterclass "Binding in the Style of Jean de Gonet" by Jacek Tylkowski (Poland)

Photo author: Jacek Tylkowski
Monday 19 to Friday 23 of October 2026
Binding in the Style of Jean de Gonet
In this workshop participants will create a contemporary binding inspired by the work of the French designer bookbinder Jean de Gonet.
In the 1970s Jean de Gonet introduced a radical approach to bookbinding in which structural elements became visible and became part of the design.
Exposed sewing structures, separate boards and unconventional materials became characteristic features of his bindings.
During the workshop participants will construct a binding with exposed sewing along the spine and separate boards attached with leather straps.
Particular attention will be given to the relationship between structure and design.
One day is devoted to decorating the leather for the bookbinding.
This technique allows great freedom in the choice of materials and offers many possibilities for individual interpretation.
Costs: € 785,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Boekbindcentrum Echten
Time: all days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
