5-day masterclass "Three Coverboard Structure" by Jacek Tylkowski (Poland)

Monday 27 to Friday 31 May 2024

About the structure:

A technique developed by the Czech master bookbinder Jan Sobota  called the "Two or Three Coverboard Structure" which utilizes a new shoulder-less binding technique.
This method is accomplished by modifying the boards to the text block. The first layer of board functions as the doublure and is covered with leather, than a second layer of board is added,
and lastly a third and final layer of board is applied, dressed in leather to form the coverboard of the book.
This unique structure will make it possible to create new and interesting designs.

Course description:

In this 5 day masterclass participants will learn how to make the Three Coverboard Structure.
Additionally, they will also learn how to decorate the top edge by using an edge gilding roll, electrically heated, and pigment foils.

Costs:     € 785,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Boekbindcentrum Echten
Time:      al days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Three-day masterclass "Decorative Stubs" by Susana Dominguez Martin (Spain)

Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July 2024

In this masterclass we will learn about stubs/meeting guards and their different uses.

The masterclass will focus on meeting guards for single sheets, followed by stubs for signatures.

Single sheets

- Meeting guards for oriental binding
- Meeting guard for adding a single sheet to a signature with a flat spine
- Meeting guard for adding a single sheet to a signature with a rounded spine and shoulder
- Meeting guards for concertinas made of single sheets with back and front joints

Signatures (codex)

- Stubs for oriental bindings
- Sewing signatures onto stubs

During the masterclass students will make two bindings:

DECORATIVE MEETING GUARDS / STUBS

"Meeting guards" or "stubs" are these add-ons made of paper or fabric that were originally used to sew loose sheets together and make them into a proper book.
Susana Domínguez Martín has been using them for decades as both a functional and decorative element. And not just for binding loose sheets, but for binding signatures too.
She developed her own folding process, which is much simpler, resulting in a clean and visually pleasing finish.

So, why do we need these meeting guards/stubs?

Well, to start with, they let a rounded spine book open up flat at 180 degrees. This makes them super handy for books with tight margins or with illustrations that span across two pages.
For those Japanese-style bindings, they make it easier to open without sacrificing so much margin space along the spine side.

The best part is, the stubs or meeting guards are probably the most book-friendly thing we can add to a bookbinding.
Why so?  These meeting guards/stubs become the new spine, and therefore they take all the adhesive and hammering without a fuss. A book bound using  these elements is 100% reversible!

And if you're considering it from the perspective of an artist's book, it's a tool that allows you to connect elements of various sizes and even formats, providing them with a sense of unity.
While it is true that the meeting guards or stubs do alter the book's original format, you can leverage this to your advantage and experiment with the book's format as well.

 Cool, right?

Three-day masterclass "Bambalina" (slide-in spine binding) by Susana Dominguez Martin (Spain)

Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 July 2024

The ‘Bambalina’ structure, conceived by Susana Domínguez Martín, is a structure in which the spine of the block undergoes some minimal intervention in order to bind it.
This structure can be described as a ‘sliding spine’ binding, as it describes how the spine works on opening the book.

The Bambalina can be accomplished going through a variety of processes, from quite simple to more complex, depending on the finishing we want to give to it.
This course also provides students with the possibility to explore some non-conventional materials such as Tyvek, copper in sheets, printed acetates, stone paper, laminated wood, …
In this course students will work a variety of complex finishings, such as turn-ins and beveling in the openings for the spine.
The students will make 1 Bambalina.

Costs: € 485,- incl. coffee/tea, an extensive lunch and all necessary materials.
Location: Bookbinding Center Echten
Time: all days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
